OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) is a display technology that emits its own light when current flows through fluorescent or phosphorescent organic compounds. A conventional LCD needs a backlight for the screen to be visible, but because OLED produces light itself, it can deliver much thinner, lighter and sharper screens.
✔️ Structure and principle
- Electrons and holes meet in the emissive layer (EML), located between the anode and cathode, and produce light
- Supporting layers such as the electron transport layer (ETL) and hole transport layer (HTL) help this process
- R/G/B organic materials in the emissive layer allow a wide range of colors
✔️ Key characteristics
- ✅ No backlight needed → thinner and lighter
- ✅ Perfect blacks → high contrast ratio
- ✅ Fast response time and wide viewing angles
- ❌ Burn-in, and higher manufacturing costs than LCD

🔗 LG Display invests 1.26 trillion won in new OLED technology… a "mega reshoring"
LG Display announced a large-scale facility investment totaling 1.26 trillion won in its OLED production bases in Paju, Korea, and in Vietnam.
- 📍 Paju: 700 billion won in new OLED technology equipment
- 📍 Vietnam: 560 billion won to convert module lines
The investment is seen not just as a capacity expansion but as part of a strategy to secure global competitiveness in the premium OLED market and to pursue reshoring.
🚗 OLED's reach and outlook
OLED is expanding beyond TVs and smartphones into a wide range of applications, such as car displays, smartwatches, stretchable displays and lighting.
📌 Markets to watch
- Automotive OLED: demand projected at more than 3 million vehicles a year as of 2025
- Lighting: drawing attention for premium interiors and eco-friendly lighting
- Wearables: flexibility enables innovative designs
Along with technological progress, it is attracting attention as a high-efficiency, eco-friendly display solution in line with ESG and carbon-neutrality trends.
✍️ Wrapping up
OLED is more than just "a nice screen."
The level of materials and technology that go into a single product ultimately shows a country's manufacturing competitiveness. Seeing LG Display's 1.26 trillion won investment, I was reminded of the strength and direction of Korea as a display powerhouse.
Beyond that, the reshoring strategy can be read not as a mere technology transfer but as a declaration that leadership in future industries will stay in Korea.
And the fact that OLED technology is at its center has a lot to tell us.
It is time to focus not on "catch-up technology" but on technology that leads the ecosystem.
OLED can be the starting point.
