Search for the Sonic train from Fukuoka to Beppu and you may find a fare of ¥2,950 in one guide and a price above ¥6,000 on a booking screen. The train is not necessarily different. The booking service, ticket product and eligibility conditions may be.
This guide focuses on Sonic journeys from Hakata to Beppu. Prices and conditions were checked on September 24, 2026. It explains official ticket information and how to read booking screens; it is not a report of a completed purchase or train journey.
1. The ¥2,950 fare exists, but check whether you can use its booking service
The Japanese reservation service offers 九州ネット早特3 — Kyushu Net Hayatoku 3. For Hakata–Beppu and Hakata–Oita, the published price is ¥2,950 per adult, one way, in an ordinary reserved seat. The number 3 refers to the purchase deadline: three days before travel. This Sonic offer is not a seven-day or fourteen-day advance ticket.
There is an important eligibility detail. The Japanese service uses JR Kyushu Web membership. Its current terms allow the company to refuse or cancel registration by people who live outside Japan. A foreign national living in Japan and a visitor who lives abroad are not in the same position.
For that reason, a guide should not simply tell overseas visitors to enter a hotel address to obtain this fare. Seeing a discounted product on a price list and being eligible to buy it through that service are separate questions.
2. Compare tickets you can actually buy

The two-ticket product works out at ¥4,250 per ticket. That does not mean a single ¥4,250 ticket is sold online. It is also a non-reserved product, so it is not equivalent to the regular reserved-seat ticket in every respect.
The multilingual JR-KYUSHU Train Reservation is a separate service for holders of non-Japanese passports. It currently sells regular tickets. Its Kyushu Net discounted products stopped being sold on September 30, 2023. Opening a Korean or English booking page therefore does not give you access to the Japanese site's ¥2,950 offer.
3. Overseas visitors can compare the two-ticket product
If you plan to return from Beppu and are comfortable travelling in a non-reserved carriage, check 2枚きっぷ（自由席）. The Fukuoka City–Beppu/Oita product contains two tickets for ¥8,500. It is sold at JR Kyushu stations and other specified local outlets, not through internet booking.
Its conditions changed recently. For purchases from July 1, 2026, this route uses non-reserved seats and the tickets are valid for seven days. Older advice describing a ¥7,600 reserved-seat product valid for one month no longer describes a new purchase. At a ticket counter, specify the starting date; a ticket-machine purchase is valid for seven days from purchase.
As a simple cost example, two regular non-reserved tickets at the observed ¥6,380 rate would total ¥12,760. Compared with the ¥8,500 two-ticket product, that is a difference of ¥4,260. This calculation compares two non-reserved journeys, not reserved seats with non-reserved seats. Check the actual fares and validity for your itinerary.
A non-reserved ticket does not secure a particular seat. If sitting together or securing a seat matters, compare the reserved-seat total as well. To use this two-ticket product in a reserved seat, buy the additional reservation charge ticket before boarding. You can show the following sentence at the counter.

4. On the Japanese website, read the train and ticket names separately
Open JR Kyushu's Japanese reservation service
If you meet its membership conditions, enter 博多 for Hakata and 別府（大分県） for Beppu in Oita Prefecture, then choose your travel date, time and passenger count. For Oita, use 大分 as the destination. You are looking for a train departing from Hakata Station, not from Fukuoka Airport.
Read the results in three steps. First, check that the train is ソニック — Sonic at the time you want. Next, check 普通車指定席 — ordinary reserved seat. Finally, read the product name: 九州ネット早特3 or 九州ネットきっぷ. The train name alone does not tell you which fare you selected. Do not accidentally choose a different itinerary involving a Shinkansen when comparing the direct Sonic discount.
For a concrete example, the search used October 15, 2026, one adult, Sonic 17 from Hakata at 11:00 to Beppu at 12:51. The Japanese results separately displayed Hayatoku 3 reserved seats at ¥2,950, Net Kippu reserved seats at ¥3,500, regular reserved seats at ¥6,910 and regular non-reserved tickets at ¥6,380. These were search results at the time of checking, not a held fare or confirmed reservation.
Hayatoku 3 goes on sale at 10:00 one month before travel. For online card payment, booking and payment must be completed by 23:00 three days before travel, in Japan time. Japan and South Korea use the same clock time. Discount inventory is limited, so ordinary seats can remain available after the discounted allocation is gone. Three days before departure is the deadline, not a reason to wait.
5. The multilingual service is a separate route for regular tickets

Use the booking link on the service guide and choose HAKATA as the departure station and BEPPU(OITA) as the arrival station. Set your date and passenger count, then review the Sonic's departure time, arrival time and seat category. This service's regular ticket price should not be confused with the Japanese membership service's discount.
If you do not already hold a valid base-fare ticket, check that your purchase includes both the limited-express ticket and the basic-fare ticket. A limited-express-only option is not necessarily your entire journey cost. Check whether the total covers one way or a return journey, and how many adults it includes.
Searching the same date, train and passenger count through the multilingual service showed Regular ticket: ¥6,910 reserved or ¥6,380 non-reserved. Comparing the same train makes the difference between that service and the Japanese site’s ¥2,950 product clear.
Tickets booked through this multilingual service must be collected before travel. Bring the physical credit card used to pay, your reservation number and the four-digit identification number you set during booking. That identification number is different from the last four digits of a phone number used in the Japanese service. At Hakata, find an eligible JR Kyushu counter or machine and leave time to collect the tickets and reach your platform.
6. Check changes and collection before paying
It is not accurate to describe Hayatoku 3 as never changeable. The detailed product conditions allow changes in certain circumstances before collection, with card payment, and before the three-day deadline. The same rules do not apply after collecting a paper ticket or after the deadline. Read the conditions for your payment method, ticket-collection status and new travel date. Cancellation can also involve a fee.
Some eligible products in the Japanese service can be bought for QR travel without collecting paper tickets. That does not mean a reservation email or a screenshot of a QR code can be used to board: display the actual QR travel screen. Keep this separate from the paper-ticket collection instructions for the multilingual regular-ticket service.
7. Finish by comparing your whole itinerary
If Beppu is your only return journey, start by comparing tickets for that route. If you will also visit places such as Nagasaki or Kumamoto, add up the other journeys and compare a Northern Kyushu Rail Pass. On the checking date, the standard adult three-day price was ¥15,000, while the official online service advertised a limited-period ¥14,000 price. Recheck the current sales price and any advance seat-reservation charges when buying.
The useful order is simple: choose a sales service you are eligible to use, list the journeys you need, then compare the total with the seat type clearly marked. A ticket that fits your actual trip is more useful than a low headline price you cannot use.
