📚 "A novel unfolds on stage"
Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop is a musical based on Hwang Bo-reum's bestselling novel, and it tells a warm story that comforts the weary hearts of people today.
The novel delicately portrays how the protagonist Yeongju, who quit her job at a large company and opened a small bookshop, recovers herself and reconnects with the world as she meets people with their own different stories. This musical is the performance that carries that sensibility intact onto the stage.
This production was staged by Theatre Company Jiwoo at Lumina Art Hall in Daehangno, and it made full use of the strengths of a small theater, breathing close to the audience to create a deeply immersive stage.
🎭 Casting & how immersive the acting was
- Yeongju – Seo Eun-gyo
Her acting, which followed a delicate emotional line, and her calm, understated delivery fit the character of Yeongju perfectly. I was deeply absorbed in her eyes and voice, where I could feel the details of every emotional shift. - Minjun – Hwang Su-bin
Minjun, the bookshop's barista, is a warm character who also worries a lot about the direction of his life. Hwang Su-bin brought out that subtle inner life very naturally and had an energy that offered quiet comfort. - Seungwoo – Kim Rok-hyeon
Seungwoo, an aspiring writer, is a sensitive but pure character. He carried both cheerfulness and an emotional mood at the same time, breathing life into the show. - Heeju – Kim Jeong-eun
With acting full of cheerful, everyday realism, she was responsible for many of the scenes that made the audience laugh. Playing Mincheol's mother, she portrayed a real family's worries with humor and plenty of empathy. In particular, her realistic portrayal of a mother worrying about her son's schooling struck a chord. She was so good at both singing and dancing! - Jungsuh – Lee Seon
The mood of Jungsuh, a quiet and weighty character, was expressed calmly and with depth. It was a performance that gave the stage a sense of balance through presence alone.
🎶 Numbers & staging: filling the stage with feeling
The overall mood of the show was quiet and warm. The stillness unique to a bookshop was beautifully expressed through the lighting and set design, and the realistic props, which made you feel you could almost smell the coffee, were excellent.
Every musical number carefully captured the feelings of each character, and songs such as "It's Okay to Be Alone" and "Start Again" in particular struck an emotional chord with the audience too. The feeling delivered through the live sound lingered long after the show.
✍️ The musical's appeal, seen through a reading of the novel
Readers who have read the original novel will experience each scene seeming to come alive before their eyes through the musical.
For example, Yeongju's inner conflict, from quitting her job to settling in Hyunam-dong and opening the bookshop, is expressed dynamically in the musical through songs and scene changes. Also, the reason Minjun came to the bookshop, Seungwoo's uncertain future, Heeju's realistic worries and the sincerity within Jungsuh's silence all become more vivid through theatrical interpretation.
Both the novel and the musical convey the shared message of "a space that connects me with other lives," and become a "comma," a place to pause for a moment, in our busy daily lives.

As I left the theater, a thought suddenly came to me:
"How wonderful would it be if a bookshop like this really existed?"
A place where, at the end of a tiring day, you could quietly go in and sit, choose a book, drink a cup of coffee and let time pass without saying a word.
